What is synthetic oil?

Synthetic oils are a blend of fluids and additives that accentuate certain properties (anti-wear, anti-pollution, anti-corrosion, etc.), and are appropriate for the most demanding and high-performance engines, and for extreme conditions (high temperatures, high pressure). 
Synthetic oils provide far superior performance in terms of use and lifetime than mineral oils.
